How Much Hoop Iron Do I Need? Calculator and Guide
Calculate exactly how much hoop iron you need for your project. Includes wall height tables and SANS 10400 course requirements.
Getting the right amount of hoop iron for your project avoids both waste and shortages. This guide shows you how to calculate your hoop iron requirements based on SANS 10400 standards.
The Formula
Total hoop iron = Wall length × Number of hoop iron courses + Overlap allowance + Corner allowance + 10% wastage
Step 1: Measure Wall Lengths
Measure the total length of all walls that need hoop iron. Include: - All external walls - All internal load-bearing walls - Boundary walls - Retaining walls - Any other masonry walls
Step 2: Count Hoop Iron Courses
Using standard 76mm course height (brick + mortar joint):
Single-leaf walls (every 6th course)
| Wall Height | Number of Courses | Hoop Iron Courses |
|---|---|---|
| 1.0m | 13 courses | 2 + top = 3 |
| 1.5m | 20 courses | 3 + top = 4 |
| 1.8m | 24 courses | 4 + top = 5 |
| 2.1m | 28 courses | 4 + top = 5 |
| 2.4m | 32 courses | 5 + top = 6 |
| 2.7m | 36 courses | 6 + top = 7 |
Cavity walls (every 4th course)
| Wall Height | Number of Courses | Hoop Iron Courses |
|---|---|---|
| 2.4m | 32 courses | 8 + top = 9 |
| 2.7m | 36 courses | 9 + top = 10 |
Step 3: Add for Openings
For each window or door opening: - Add wall length × 4 courses above the lintel - Add window width + 600mm for sill reinforcement - Add lintel width + 600mm for lintel reinforcement
Step 4: Add Overlaps and Corners
- Overlaps: Add 150mm for every joint (approximately every 50m on a roll)
- Corners: Add 300mm for each corner in each hoop iron course
Step 5: Add 10% Wastage
Multiply your total by 1.1 to account for cutting waste and measurement errors.
Example Calculation
Project: A 10m x 8m house, 2.4m wall height, single-leaf walls, 4 windows and 2 doors.
- Total wall length: (10 + 8) × 2 = 36m
- Hoop iron courses: 6 (from table)
- Wall hoop iron: 36m × 6 = 216m
- Openings: (4 windows + 2 doors) × 4m average = 24m
- Corners: 4 corners × 0.3m × 6 courses = 7.2m
- Subtotal: 216 + 24 + 7.2 = 247.2m
- Plus 10% wastage: 247.2 × 1.1 = 272m
- Order: 6 × 50m rolls = 300m (rounds up to nearest roll)

Frequently Asked Questions
How do you calculate hoop iron for a house?
Measure total wall lengths, determine the number of hoop iron courses based on wall height and SANS 10400 (every 6th course for single-leaf, every 4th for cavity), add allowances for openings, overlaps, and corners, then add 10% for wastage. Contact us with your dimensions for a free calculation.
How many metres of hoop iron are in a roll?
Standard hoop iron rolls are 50 metres. Custom lengths are also available — contact us for specific requirements.
